"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." -- Oscar Wilde
"Je est un autre." -- Arthur Rimbaud
Painting for me is a way of wondering what my life might have been like, if. I start with my own experiences, but I fictionalize the outcomes and change the cast. It's a way of alluding to things I can't quite say, about myself or about places I've been, people I've known and how I felt about it all. Like an author, I can give those lines to my characters instead. I hope that the paintings have a sociological aspect, too. I've lived with the expectations of a certain culture, but I wouldn't say that my failure to meet them has been particularly tragic.
